Into the Floating Gardens
Xochimilco’s canal network is one of the last surviving remnants of the elaborate waterway system that covered the Valley of Mexico before the Spanish arrived. The Aztecs built the chinampas — rectangular plots of farmland literally constructed on the lake surface using layers of aquatic vegetation, mud, and stakes — over a thousand years ago. They are still farmed today by the same communities. Still producing flowers, vegetables, and corn for Mexico City’s markets. Paddling through them, at water level, with nothing but the sound of birds and your guide’s voice, is one of those experiences that makes you wonder why you ever thought a crowded boat was the way to see this place.
The Axolotl

Xochimilco is the last natural habitat of the axolotl — the extraordinary aquatic salamander that has fascinated scientists worldwide for its remarkable ability to regenerate lost limbs. Once abundant throughout the lakes of central Mexico, the axolotl is now critically endangered and survives almost exclusively in the canals of Xochimilco. Your guide will explain the conservation efforts underway to protect them, and if conditions are right, you may spot one during your paddle. Either way, the chinampa demonstration stop gives you a real understanding of the ecosystem these ancient waterways sustain.
Lunch on a Chinampa
Farm to Table, Aztec Style
After your kayak session, the tour includes lunch on a working chinampa a meal prepared with ingredients grown right there on the floating garden. Vegetarian and vegan options are available. This isn’t a tourist restaurant set up to look authentic. It’s the real thing: a family farm, on the water, feeding you food they actually grow. It’s one of the best meals you’ll have in Mexico City, and the setting is unlike anything else.
San Ángel & The Frida Kahlo Blue House
Art and History on Cobblestones
The tour continues into San Ángel one of Mexico City’s most beautiful and undervisited neighborhoods. A former colonial town absorbed by the expanding city, San Ángel has kept its cobblestone streets, baroque churches, and 16th-century architecture largely intact. Your guide will walk you through the neighborhood’s history and past the studios where Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo lived and worked as a couple.
The tour ends at the exterior of La Casa Azul the cobalt-blue house in nearby Coyoacán where Frida Kahlo was born, lived, and died. Your guide will speak about her life, her work, and the house’s history. Admission to the museum is not included in the tour price, but can be added as an optional extra if you want to go inside. Either way, standing outside the Blue House after a morning on the canals of Xochimilco, you’ll have covered a completely different side of Mexico City from any other tour out there.
