Today the castle houses the National Museum of Mexican History — which sounds dry until you’re standing inside Maximilian’s actual bedroom looking at the original furniture, or staring at Diego Rivera’s panoramic mural of Mexican history painted directly onto the walls. Chapultepec Park is one of the largest urban parks in the world — bigger than Central Park, older than most countries. Walking through it on the way up to the castle is part of the experience. The Aztec name means “Hill of Grasshoppers,” and the hill itself is still covered in ancient ahuehuete cypress trees, some over 700 years old.
As you ascend toward the castle entrance, your guide will walk you through the site’s layered history: from Aztec ritual use to the Military Academy where Mexico’s famous “Boy Heroes” (Niños Héroes) died defending the castle from American forces in 1847 — an event that still shapes Mexican identity today.
